Early Life

On August 15, 1980, Inetimi Timaya Odon was born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He was the youngest of fifteen children raised in a huge family in Agip Estate, Port Harcourt. He is a native of Bayelsa state’s Odi.
His mother was a merchant, while his father worked in banking. Timaya had his early schooling at the Assemblies of God Nursery And Primary School. In Port Harcourt, at Nkpolu Oroworukwo, he commenced his secondary schooling.
He often disobeyed home regulations to go to late-night musical events. Timaya’s mother planned a trip to Lagos with his elder brother and sister before he could complete his education. He was accepted into Lagos’ Ikeja Grammar School after relocating there, and there he finally graduated with a secondary school diploma.

Timaya eventually went back to Port Harcourt to finish her tertiary banking and finance studies. He failed his exams, nevertheless, and left school after the first semester. He returned to Lagos to perform with Eedris Abdulkareem’s hip-hop ensemble as a backing singer.

Timaya left the group to concentrate on his solo career after three years of working with Eedris Abdulkareem. He started to record collaborations with other upcoming musicians and made his first cameo in an unreleased music video for the rap group UDX from Lagos. After hearing him play the Cappella version, producer Obaksolo in Mafoluku, Oshodi, recorded his first significant hit song, “Dem Mama.”

He collaborated with Menthol X’s Namse Udosen on the song “Pomporo” from his first album True Story.

In an interview published in August 2013, Timaya described the song, saying: “‘Dem Mama’ was an account of the devastation of Odi, a riverfront hamlet in the Niger Delta, in 1999. Soldiers were looking for suspected militants who had murdered eight cops. Many people were murdered, and the community was completely destroyed by fire. Years later, I boldly took on the problem and immediately gained a street reputation.

Education

Timaya had his pre-primary and elementary schooling at the Assemblies of God Nursery and Primary School. After that, he went to Nkpolu Oroworukwo Secondary School in Port Harcourt.

Before he completed his secondary education in Port Harcourt, his mother had him go with his older brother and sister to Lagos. He was admitted to Ikeja Grammar School in Lagos when he arrived.

Timaya returned to Port Harcourt after finishing high school to enroll in the university’s Banking and Finance program, but he finally walked out after failing his first semester’s examinations.
