The Senate Proposes To Raise The Higher Education Levy To 3%

The Senate Committee on Higher Education has proposed raising the higher education levy from 2.5 to 3%.

The committee notes that it would promote research and innovation in the country during an inspection visitation to Higher Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to determine the degree of financial results in 2021/2022.

The committee, led by Senator Ahmed Babba Kaita, also indicated that health and education are two essential areas that promote growth, indicating the necessity for the upward adjustment of the education tax.

The committee also asked the administration to include the National Mathematical Centre (NMC) in its initiatives, claiming that the country would flourish in the fields of research, science, technology, and innovations without integrating mathematics.

Kaita equally asked TETFund to accelerate plans to provide oxygen generators sought by Kaduna State Polytechnic for COVID-19 in 2020, according to Daily Trust.
